Abstract

Bioethical problems are currently a permanent element of social debate. From time to time return issues such as: use of the in vitro procedure, performing abortions and euthanasia. There are new issues related to, for example, the statement of brain death, transplantation and treatment of children without the knowledge and consent of their parents. Not only doctors, but also representatives of other scientific specialties speak on these topics; philosophers, rightists, theologians, sociologists and lawyers. Can bioethical topics interest film makers as well? Can film production help answer to key, human questions?

It turns out that for several decades ethical dilemmas of modern medicine appear as an element of the plot of a particular film. Increasingly, we are talking here about film productions with well-known and respected actors. In these films, the moral dilemma associated with the development of medicine is often one of the most important motifs of the story. At this point, however, it is worth considering.

What is the purpose of putting bioethical themes in contemporary cinema? Do film productions enter the role of a "global teacher and educator"? Do they have a real influence on shaping attitudes about the dignity of human life? Can they help in the responsible development of a human rights culture?

The article aims to answer the questions.
