Abstract
In psychological literature, the positive role of self-disclosure in building satisfying interpersonal relations is often emphasized, less often talks about the risk connected with revealing the self. The article discusses the main reasons for the low (anxious) motivation to self-disclosure in both personality and social nature. Personality factors include personality traits such as low self-esteem, social perfectionism or insecure attachment styles. Social factors include unfavourable reactions of the environment to controversial facts about the life of the individual (such as staying in prison, mental illness, or non-normative sexual orientation), the disclosure of which may stigmatize person’s identity. The studies cited in the article show that people with low self-esteem do not reduce their tension after confessing to failures, because they cannot appreciate the support of a partner, in turn success or positive labels can increase the sense of conditional acceptance.References
