Abstrakt
The issue of suicide is a very important matter, as it affects not only individual character but also the entire society. According to the WHO, a suicide attempt is being made every three seconds and a suicide death occurs every minute. Close to 800,000 people in the world die each year due to suicide (WHO, 2017). Knowledge of the factors and mechanisms of the formation of suicidal behavior is very important when planning and conducting preventive, interventional and therapeutic activities. However, research in the field of suicidology focuses mainly on social and demographic factors. This work is a review of psychological theories and factors leading to suicide. Following theories were presented: Beck's hopelessness theory (Beck et al., 1985), Snyder's theory of hope (2002), model of protective factors, Sánchez's depression risk factors (2001) and interpersonal theory. Attention was paid to factors such as attitude to one's body, coping with stressful situations, individual differences, the system of values and factors related to the environment of the family.
