Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this paper is to search for a correlation between self-efficacy, health locus of control and self-care for health, as well as determining the best predictors of self-care for health. Method: The independent variables were measured with the use of following methods: Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale by Schwartzer et al. and Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale by Wallston. The dependent variable was estimated with STOZ by Rosińska (self-care for health). The study was conducted in the group of 121 women. Results:
The result of the study has revealed positive correlations between the general level of care for health and its components: active attitude towards the mothers own health, their practical health and the following variables: self-efficacy, external health locus of control- influence of others (or powerful others) and internal health locus of control. The study has also indicated the negative correlations between self-care for health (in general and subscales) and external locus of health control- influence of case (or chance externality). Models of linear regression were created to indicate the variables explaing the best way the subject’s self-care for health. Self-efficacy was proved as the strongest predictor almost in every model. Conclusions: The results of this research could be the basis for considerations about self-care condition in different groups of people. Mothers with higher level of self-efficacy are more likely to provide their children with such condition. It is also worth mentioning that responsability for our health, which is related to the belief that our actions may influence our health condition (by choosing healthy activities) and are effective, is a crucial part of the health programs dedicated not only to the health risk groups.
