Fenomenowi twórczości niejednokrotnie towarzyszą zaburzenia psychiczne. Szczególnie wiele osób zmagających się z chorobą afektywną dwubiegunową jest obdarzonych talentem plastycznym, muzycznym bądź literackim. Chorzy na ChAD doświadczają naprzemiennych stanów depresyjnych oraz maniakalnych. Przeżywane przez nich emocje są kanalizowane poprzez działalność twórczą, która stanowi specyficzny rodzaj komunikacji twórcy ze światem zewnętrznym.
